Reply: (edit)If it works through your router they why not keep it that way? I cannot remember exactly but I think your cable modem needs the mac address of the network card in which you originaly installed the modem with. You may have to reset your modem. Routers clone the mac address of the pc you originaly setup with. Anyone am I close? ASUS A7V8X AMD XP 2700+ 2.17ghz 768mb ddr 2700 128mb FX 5200 WD 80gb DVD R/RW

Reply: (edit)i dont think resetting the modem works...it still wouldnt connect...i checked using the cmd and typed ipconfig when it was connected to the modem and it showed: Connection-specific DNS Suffix: Autoconfiguration IP Adress: 169.254.77.73 Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0 Default Gateway: it doesnt show anything for the gateway and suffix...

Reply: (edit)Each time you change the configuration you have to do a full power reset on modem, router and pc Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach him to fish and you feed him for life.

Reply: (edit)The modem is the main thing that needs to be power-reset(Turned off at the power source and then turned back on) whenever there is a change to the hardware that is direct connected to it. So in your case when you take the router out of the loop and put your PC directly linked to the modem, then a reset will be required. Reset again when you swap it back. This is because the modem detects and configures itself for the mac address of whatever device it first detects. Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach him to fish and you feed him for life.
