I have been connecting to my network just fine then suddenly, after resetting the cable modem due to a dropped cable connection, it stopped connecting to my workgroup. I still have internet access. I can ping the other computers by IP, but not by name - says the network doesn't exist. When I try and check the properties I get an error "the instruction at "0x76f3082c" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be read. So I can't check my TCIP settings but according to my router, it has an IP address and it's changing so must be set for DHCP. I looked to see if any services were off that should be on, and turned on some things I thought might be relevant. I had a drive mapped from this computer to another and that's the reason I need it to work. No firewalls anywhere either, reinstalled SiS PCI LAN drivers 2x just in case...this is making me crazy. Any ideas? Thanks!!!!

Sounds like a software issue, uninstall the tcp/ip protocol, restart, and reinstall it, make sure if your not useing a dhcp server to reenter the network ip address. if this becomes a major problem you can always use lmhosts or if you have a server WINS Controller let me know how it goes for you or how you can use WIN/Lmhosts to make it work

My problem is I can't get to the TCIP protocol because I get the memory error. Is there a way of getting there from a command prompt? I foolishly ran Comcast's "Doctor" program just before this happened trying to reestablish my internet connection but they say it couldn't have done this (I'm not so sure....). I'm not familiar with WINS or LMHosts (other than to know they exist, but as I said, can't get to the Network Connection properties - think that's where I saw them....

It sounds like your problem is not with the network but with your OS. You will have to try to figure out why you get that error. Before you can change anything with the network. You can change IP address and other configurations in the registry but this realy wont help what your tring to do.
PS the values are hex. in the registry.

its not that I am afraid to die, I just don't want to be there when It happens !

Have you tried bypassing your router to see if a single PC can connect? You'll need to reset the modem again if you do this.

Thank you for calling tech support. We're not satisfied until you're not satisfied.

I have 5 computers on my network - 4 can see each other except the one with the issue (it has windows 2000 sp4) so doubt it's the router. That computer DID connect to everything Tuesday, but suddenly I couldn't connect and when I went exploring to find out why, I discovered this memory error thing. It connects just fine to the internet and I can ping it by IP from the other computers - just can't share files or ping it by name (which I could do until it "died"). Keep getting (from all computers) that the network is not present or not started. (yet it's obviously working or they couldn't see each other right?) It does sound like there is something funky going on with the memory or windows - since it worked the other day! Ran all my spyware/virus scanners - the usual junk but nothing evil. I have researched all over and can't find the error anywhere. Thanks again.

AHHHHH! Figured it out! Thanks for all your advice and assistance. I AGAIN reinstalled the nic drivers and the 3rd time was the charm. I think something wasn't installing properly which led to my memory errors and not being able to even get into Network Properties to see what was going on. The odd thing is it never told me it didn't install right any of those times - seemed fine. I uninstalled them, rebooted, installed, rebooted again and it worked this time. It was a Sis 900-Based PCI Fast Ethernet Adaptor on an Asus motherboard for anyone that may have this problem in the future. Almost drove me mad! Thanks again for your help!
