Comment: My laptop has a linksys 802.11g wireless card, and i'm trying to connect it to my d-link 802.11g router at my home. The linksys rounter screen shows my ssid, channel 11, wep enabled. I tried to connect to it, entered in the correct wep key, but it won't connect, not even to the router. I tried going to 192.168.0.1 and i can't even get into the router setup. Any ideas on why i can't connect to it. I tried my laptop at my friends house who has a linksys rounter and is on channel 6, and it worked fine. Could it be that my wireless card is still on channel 6 and not on 11? If so how so i change that?

Reply: (edit)Once encryption is enabled on a wireless connection the settings are crucial. Entering the WEP key is only part of the process in the client machine. Is it 64bit WEP? If so you need to take note of other settings as well. Firstly are you using an OPEN or SHARED key? Secondly are you using key number 1,2,3 or 4. Since you say the router screen gives you certain information I presume you have another PC already connected to the router from which you can log-in as administrator. Verify these other settings and adjust the laptop to match. I used to have a signature but it disappeared and I just couldn't be bothered writing another so please feel free to ingore this.
