i have a D-link wireless adsl router DSL-G604T. i have a laptop with a usb belkin wireless sender. my main computer connects to the internet via BT through an adsl modem then into the phone line as normal.i click on the bt icon on the desktop then the connect button to connect to the internet. the connect box has my username and password in it. my adsl modem has to have the green light on before i can connect. i am trying to connect the laptop up through wireless to the internet but cant. i have an ethernet cable into the router and into an ethernet card in the main computer. if i connect the phone line from the router into the phone line wall jack i can get wireless internet through the laptop but it cuts off the main bt adsl modem. if i take it out then the bt adsl modem comes back online. i cant connect both phone lines , ie, the router phone line and my adsl modem phone line at the same time. one cuts out the other. i have heard that if i have a router then i dont need my adsl modem, but, if i have to click the bt icon to connect, how do i do this if the phone line only runs through the router thus disabling my adsl modem and software on the main computer. i can see both computers on the network so i think the network as such is ok. its only the phone line connections that i cant work out. very confused. sorry for posting on xmas day lol but my daughter is getting impatient. its her laptop. many thanks.

A modem is required with DSL no matter what. It's what separates the signal. Normally a DSL setup (like mine) is as follows:
Phone line >> DSL Modem >> Router (WAN/External Interface) >> PC's (Internal Ports on Router)
You set your router to DHCP on the WAN (external) interface. The simplest thing to do is then set DHCP up on the router to assign IP's to clients in the LAN and set the clients to get their IP's automatically.

The DSL-G604T includes an ADSL modem so that's not the problem: He can't use his "main" ADSL modem with the router plugged into the phone line.
Well, OF COURSE you can't: You only have one connection per modem line and you only have one line set up (regardless of how many phone jacks you're using). If you use the router's modem then the BT modem can't connect.
What you can do is connect your BT Modem to the router via its uplink port. You may need a crossover cable and to disable its built-in ADSL modem; check your manual. Then you should be able to use your existing software to connect your old PC to the Internet at the same time as the wireless laptop.

thanks for the replies guys. i've sorted it out. everyone says you cant have an adsl modem with the router modem so thats something i had to go on. not one of my manuals for the wireless set up however said that i should delete my current bt connection and uninstall my bt adsl modem. lol. once bt was uninstalled the router worked straight away. my bt connection was overiding everything else including the ethernet card. even without trying to use it it was interfering with the router once the router was plugged into the phone line. so there we go. you live and learn. lol many thanks for your help.
