Can't communicate with switch

I am trying to set up a simple home network with two computers. Both are running Windows XP Home Edition. One computer connects to the router/switch fine and can use the DSL connection and everything. The other computer can't communicate at all with the router/switch. It can't aqire an IP address from DHCP, it can't ping the switch's IP address and it can't connect to the internet. We swapped the NICs, cables and switch ports and it made no difference. Manually setting the IP address is futile, as the problem computer can't communicate with the switch in the first place. Reseting the TCP/IP stack yields no results. I'm about ready to backup 30 GB of stuff and reinstall the OS. Any help in solving this problem another way will be more than appreciated.
