Can't be seen on the network

August 16, 2006 at 11:23:20
Specs: XP Home, P4 OC 3.12 HT

Whenever i go to a LAN or connect up to somebody's network, nobody can see me nor access me when i share files or try to host a game! i have double checked my IP address situation whether in a router or in a switch. my windows firewall and sygate firewall are both turned off (i also exited out of them jsut incase). file and printer sharing is turned on. by typing in my computer's name in the address bar - \\walker - the common message "this computer is unaccessible or not found" or "you do not have permission to access this computer." even though it set file permissions when i shared the files. anybody know a possible solution?

Go to control panel->network settings->advanced Make sure client for microsoft networks and file and printer sharing are bound to the card.

Also check you tcp/ip advanced settings and check netbios over tcp/ip if you're not running netbeui.(which you can force an install of)

You can cheat and work around the issue possibly if you edit your friend's host file and add an entry.(c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts)

<your ip address> walker

also make sure you have 127.0.0.1 localhost in there as well.

hope it helps

Hi, Walker!

Are you sure that your cables are working properly? This is a common problem and I can't count the number of times this has happened to me. You can change as many settings as you like but if you have a faulty cable, it's not going to change a darn thing. Test your cable on another couple of computers and see if they work because if they don't, you've got a faulty wire.

i changed those settings you were talking about mike, but nothing happened. yet still, i cannot be seen. o well. im formatting again soon, so hopefully that'll solve the issue - because i once could be seen on the network and was able to host games and stuff but all of a sudden...hmmm. thanks for the help everyone.

Sorry we couldn't help.

Wait a minute, I've just thought of something. Have you gone into network neighborhood and clicked on the link saying "Make New Network Connection". I'm just guessing that's what it says because I can't remember what it actually says but you know the gist of it. Try that and see what happens, unless you've already done this. I which case, I'm fresh outta ideas for the time being. :S Sorry I couldn't give you any better solutions.
