Subject: can't access shared files

Comment: I'm running W2K Profession using a TCP/IP protocol. My broadband provider is ATT (Cable modem). I can't seem to access my shared folder/files from any other location through the internet using microsoft networks. I have enabled client for MS networks and file and print sharing in addition to ensuring at least some documents are shared with the correct permissions. I have tried to access the files through a variety of different service provides, using different OSs, but all using TCP/IP Please advise

Reply: (edit)You need to create an account in Windows 2000 for the computer you plan to access it from and assign it permissions to the drive you plan to share. Lets say you have a Windows98 computer. Create a log-in account on the computer with the username bob and password 123. Go to your W2K computer and create a user called bob with the password 123 and give it permission to share the C drive.

Reply: (edit)I had that thought too - I experience this problem even if I am using another W2K computer with an identical login/password (if fact its an administrator login/password on both machines) Any other thoughts? I'm worried that some ports have been blocked by ATT Chris

Reply: (edit)I have a network with a W2Kpro machine and a Win98 machine. In order for me to see them both in the network neighborhood and use file&print sharing I had to install the netBEUI protocol. You might want to give that a try.

Reply: (edit)if your sharing a drive e.g. C: drive you have to change the sharing name so there is no $ sign ... the $ sign will make it non shareable... :) ..No question is stupid, its those that dont ask questions who ultimately end up stupid..
