I have a Westell VersaLink 327w and Verizon DSL. I just created a network with my XP desktop so I could have a wireless connection with my new laptop. Verizon instructions are to access the router admin page by putting 192.168.1.1 in my browser but this times out. Here's the results of ipconfig/all

Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner>ipconfig

Windows IP Configuration

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 5:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 0.0.0.0
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 0.0.0.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :

PPP adapter Verizon Online:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 64.223.234.163
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.255
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 64.223.234.163

Hope someone can help.

Looks to me like your modem is configured to be in bridge mode as opposed to routed mode.

If you really want to get into your DSL modem, go to the TCP/IP properties of your Ethernet adapter and assign the following information

IP: 192.168.1.100
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

Once this is done, try to access the modem again via 192.168.1.1. Once you wish to get back to surfing the net, go back into the TCP/IP Properties and set your IP Address to Obtain Automatically.

Thanks for responding. The TCP/IP properties page lets my specify an IP address and a DNS server address but doesn't give a subnet mask option, or is that the same as the subnet mask?

either in bridge mode or plugged into the wrong port if a multiport unit. dsl and pc are both in the lan ports. dsl needs to go to wan port. you will know soon enough if the 192.168.1.100 ip assignment doesn't work

Imagine the power if you knew how to internet search

Yes, make the Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0.

OK, good. That got me into the router admin page. I haven't been able to connect my laptop yet, so I may be back with more questions. Thanks for the help.
