Subject: cannot see users D/Ling from LAN? OS: Windows XP Corp CPU/Ram: Athlon 1800+, 512MB pc133

Comment: Hi, I have a quick (and probably simple question). I'm connected to a University LAN and have a number of files shared via windows XP file sharing/networking. There are times when I would like to prevent or stop certain people from downloading files, or if nothing else, see who is downloading what from my computer. I've checked out the Computer Management option under Administrator tools in the Control Panel and have found a list of users, but no way to see what specific files they're downloading or how to block them. I THINK I vaugly recall using an old version of Black Ice Defender when I was using Millenium to track this, but I don't have the updated program. Thanks for any help!

Reply: (edit)If you want to prevent someone from downloading a file, the best thing to do is to put a password on it. You could also use a firewall to block them, which would also allow logging.

Reply: (edit)Thanks for the info Galacticroot. HOwever I'd like my files to be open to (almost) all people, hence the password protection isn't my best option. Does anyone have a suggestion of a good firewall I can use, preferably free?
