I've read many posts on this problem but I can't get anything to work. My home computer I wiped my hard-drive out and re-installed Win98SE. I have a cable modem and I have verified with my ISP that I have all properties set correctly in my Network. When I run Winipcfg I try to release the IP but it won't. These are the following things that I've tried. 1) Turned modem on/off.
2) Checked my ethernet cable. (even bought a new one)
3) Deleted and added back TCP/IP protocols
4) Removed/reinstalled drivers
5) Turned off the IP auto configuration. (I guess this did reset the IP but DHCP would not renew it)
6) Tried to go into REGEDIT and manually delete the old IP's (couldn't find where it was located though)I'd really appreciate any ideas. I'm addicted to computer/internet and I'm getting the shakes real bad now. Not to mention it costs an arm and a leg for broadband service that I'm not getting. Thanks.
from your ISP, are you getting DHCP requst? if so try doing c:>winipcfg /renew [enter]

Can you ping your ISP's gateway from the DOS prompt?
The 169.x.x.x address means that you are not connected so the computer will not be able to get a proper address. Double check the hardware connections.
I have not tried to ping the ISP. I'm currently using my pc at work so I can't try that for a while. As far as double checking my connections I've done that several times. A couple things that I've tried that I forgot to mention was swapping out network cards. Also, I tried using the USB connection; however, I can't get a driver loaded for that. I downloaded the Exact correct driver and tried to install it but it won't take it. So this is why I've tried going back to my ethernet connection. I suppose worse case scenario is that my modem is going bad. Maybe I should kneel and pray to the almighty Bill Gates deity.
this may sound dumb, but could your firewall be blocking the outbound traffic? If you wiped your hard drive you would have to reinstall/reconfigure your firewall if you've got one :)
With the 169 IP, it's not actually a DHCP address, it's a private IP that Windows gives you when it can't contact an actual DHCP server - you have no connectivity to the outside world, nor can you release that IP.. that is by design ;-) If you have been swapping NIC cards, drivers, etc - that will be your problem..there are too many possibilities to number here, but you need to choose a card that is a name brand, take it with you to work, and download the latest driver for it. Then you may have more success installing and configuring it at home.
