Cannot Ping a Device on same subnet

November 3, 2010 at 08:13:00
Specs: Windows XP
Two devices on same subnet -

1st device is a P.C 11.22.33.1 mask 255.255.0.0 default gateway 11.22.10.1
2nd Time Recording Unit 11.22.33.9 mask 255.255.0.0 default gateway 11.22.10.1

1st device can ping 2nd device

I can ping 1st device from subnet 11.33.0.0
I cannot ping 2nd device.
2nd device has a broadbast address set as 11.22.255.255

There are no routers involved, two sites connected via fibre.

default gateway doesn't matter
2nd device doesn't have a broadcast id. A subnet has a broadcast id and even that does not apply to your situation.

Is the 2nd device working?
Is the 2nd device configured to respond to icmp?

Just because a device doesn't respond to ping doesn't mean there is anything wrong.

Hi
Thanks for response.
When at the remote site I can ping the second device and log into it via I.E.
I just cannot ping or login from any other subnet.
I can ping and connect to all other devices on that subnet.

They are in the same subnet not different. Why do you keep saying different subnet?

1st device is a P.C 11.22.33.1
2nd Recording Unit 11.22.33.9

How is this fiber connected?
To switches at each end?
Make and model?
Doing vlans?

Hi
Problem solved, when logging into the unit the subnet mask shows as 255.255.0.0,
in reality it is 255.255.255.0.

That would explain it. The device wasn't in the same subnet. Looks like you had your different subnet all along :-)
