My laptop was working fine - able to connect wirelessly to Internet through router and network with desktop PC. Now for no apparent reason, laptop cannot connect to Internet nor access other PC on network. "View workgroup computers" no longer shows the desktop PC although when I hover over the network icon in the tray, it says "Wireless network connection: Excellent." I have gone through the network setup wizard with no luck. Any tips appreciated.

The icon on the tray says you are connected? Is there anyone else in your area that is using a wireless router?

No, no one else using a router here. As I said, everything was fine until today.

Try rebooting your w/l router, and make sure that you have your wireless adaptor connected. Sometimes you have to reconnect manually after it has tried and failed to connect several times on it's own. If all else try unistalling the software for your adaptor and reinstalling it.

What is the wireless adaptor? My laptop has wireless integral and it communicates to my Linksys router. A second desktop PC in my home is working okay wirelessly through that same router.

Thanks for your help so far.

Never mind, you don't have an adaptor. You are going to have to go to start from the beginning. Disconnect all the computers from your router.
Steps I would take.
1) Power down your laptop.
2) Power down your linksys router.
3) Power down your cable modem.
4) **Do not connect any computers to your router. At this point what we want to do is make sure we can get the laptop on the internet.
5) Take a paper clip and press the reset button on the linksys.(THIS WILL ERASE ANY SETTINGS ON THE LINKSYS THAT ARE THERE NOW)
Hold the reset in for about 1 minute, this will clear EVERYTHING.
6)Make sure that your laptop is turned off also.
7)Connect your cable modem to your linksys.(DO NOT TURN THE ROUTER OR LINKSYS ON YET.)
8)Turn your cable modem on and wait till it's completely up.
9)Turn your linksys router on wait till it's completely up.
10)Turn your laptop on.
11)Check your connection to the internet.
12)Try to do this as close to the wireless router as you can, just to eliminate the possibility of interference.

IF THIS DOESN'T WORK DON'T GO NUTS...THERE ARE MORE STEP THAT YOU CAN DO.

For 1 we may need to check the software on the laptop and make sure that it is working properly.<-----BUT TRY THE ABOVE FIRST. AND LET ME KNOW IF WORKS.

I tried all the steps and still have the same problem. And something I noticed - now, (on the laptop) when I go to "view workgroup computers" there is nothing listed vs. before when the laptop was listed.

Are you sure you have the software on your laptop activated? It sounds like the laptop is not seeing the router vise-versa. Make sure that the laptops wireless software is activated and searching for any available wireless networks...
1)Have you edited the routers setting after doing my last post.
2)Have you activated (WEP)in the routers settings?
What king of laptop do you have.
what kind of router do you have.

I don't know if I have the software on the laptop activated (I don't know anything about that).

I'm sorry to be a difficult customer, but in case you didn't already notice, I'm computer-challenged.

I also don't know how to edit the router's setting. What is WEP?

My laptop is a Sony Vaio PCG-SRX87P.

The router is a Linksys BEFW 11S4.

I'll add some info - I don't know if this is relevant: In Windows "Network Connections," there is an entry that is labeled "Wireless Network Connection, Enabled, Bridged."

I see that you have a Linksys BEFW 11S4 wireless "b" router. I looked up your laptop, but I don't see the wireless feature on the description of your laptop. Are you sure that computer has a built in wireless antenna?

Yes, the computer has built-in wireless. It was working fine until a couple of days ago.

Go to network connections.
Disable wireless connections.
Reboot your computer.
Re-enable wireless connections under the network connections.

Also look in your laptop's manual and see if there is a keyed activation that you have to press to enable the built in wireless antenna. I have a friend of mine that just bought a laptop with that feature and he has to press the funtions key and the f2 key to enable the antenna...

I started to follow the instructions in your message and I noticed that the Wireless Network Connection was under "Network Bridge." It was not in that location the last time I had the laptop on. So I right-clicked and chose "Remove from bridge." That placed it under "LAN or High-Speed Internet." Then everything worked fine.

So, I didn't get a chance to try your suggestion, but what I did may have essentially been the same thing.

You spent a lot of time on this problem for me and I want you to know I really appreciate it.

BTW, how could this have happened without my intentionally doing anything?

Thank you.

It's possible that when you rebooted your computer the router's DHCP may have reset it... Hopefully you should be all set.
