Here is the situation:I have no access to the main router/switch (dont have the username/password and resetting it is not an option). All of the ip addresses are static. I just formatted a machine and neglected to write down the static ip address. Now I have all the other essential information (gateway, dns server, etc...) But since I have no access to the damn router/switch is there anyway (besides manually inputting the 250 so ip addresses that it could be) of me finding out what a particular port on a switch's ip address is. I can trace the ehternet cable to the exact port on the 20 port switch. Can i hook up a laptop that will sniff out that port or someting to find that damn static ip address..

Try a nslookup on the machine hostname (format hostname.domainname). If a DNS server is setup properly it should repeat back the ip address, hostname and DNS server info.

You don't have to try all those IPs unless you have 254 machines on that subnet. You should be able to use the first IP that doesn't give you a conflict error.

since the ip addresses are STATIC the router or [least of all] switch won't tell you anything.
I would look at other machines in the room [like the one to the left and the one to the right] and see if they follow a plan like the right one is .10 and the left one is .12 which means yours is .11
There should also be a document somewhere that details your ip plan if static.
Give a person a fish, they eat for a day. Suggest they internet search and they learn a skill for a lifetime.

Download and run Angry IP Scanner. It will return the host names of the IP addresses it finds "alive" on the network. And it's free.

"Try a nslookup on the machine hostname..."
Gotta ask...
How do you perform a DNS query when you don't have a valid IP yet? ;-)
