Cannot get internet on second comp

March 22, 2008 at 05:53:15
Specs: Microsoft Windows XP Home, 2.21 GHZ / 1.00GB
I bought my son a computer about a year ago and was able to connect his computer to the internet using a Netgear WGT624 router. It was easy to set up and I had no problems at all.
His computer then went on the blink and we had it repaired, it was wiped clean and we had to start again. Now when I try to connect to the internet through the router I cannot get his computer connected to the internet. I have tried starting from scratch, uninstalling netgear, switching of the modem, unplugging/pugging all the cables back in but nothing seems to do it.
My computer is showing Local area connection/connected/firewalled. His is showing Access: local only Connection: wireless network connection 4 (Netgear) signal strength: very good.
It looks as though he has a connection but it shows Home(this computer0 a green line, netgear then a red cross then internet.

i also seem to have a different IP address to his.

Can you help please.

i also seem to have a different IP address to his.

That would be a problem. Check the properties of his network interface, the TCP/IP properties. Is it set to DHCP (get IP automatically)? If not, change it to that setting and reboot and see if it doesn't start working.

There does not seem to be a DHCP box to tick. He has Windows Vista on his computer.

You put Windows XP as the OS. That field is for the OS of the problem computer.

You said there doesn't seem to be a DHCP box to tick. Where did you look?

Do you have a Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) or similar entry in your LAN Properties? If so, the entry to obtain the IP Automatically should be checked in the Properties.

If it's set to DHCP and still not working, Look here:

I`m looking in control panel/network connections/local area connection/properties.

I have a box ticked for internet protocol TCP/IP. I was looking for the DHCP there.

The other computer has Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)

Damn frustrating business this networking lark. :)

Did you look at the Properties to see what the settings are?
