hi,

i trying to connect to my vpn server throught a eicon diva 2440 adsl router in the office.

after the message box saying connecting to xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx, it show another box vertifying username and password, after a while, an error 721 popped up and said connection failed.

any kind souls can advise me? i had configured port 1723 to forward to the vpn server and set the security level of e router to low. i had also tried to connect to the vpn server in the office which worked fine. seem like the router is giving the problem.

I was also losing my corporate VPN connection every few minutes then I started asking some questions to my internal IT guys and I found out my routers IP address was the same internal IP address range for my corporate network and that was causing the problem. They were using 192.168.x.x and my router was set to the same IP octet of 192.168.x.x. What I did was change my routers IP address to a completely different IP range. You can use something like for example 172.16.x.x, or whatever. I don't know if that will fix your problem but maybe something to look at.

It sounds like the vpn part is working because it gets as far as verifying username and password so check the "remote access permission" for that account and check "allow access".

fritz,

i tried connecting internally (within the network, never pass through the router), and i can connect to the vpn server.

could it still be the permission problem?

No its not, its a problem in the NAT table of your router. It might work if you set your DEFAULT SERVER on the ip adress of you VPN server, but if you use the same connection to gain access to the internet then your internet will not work. Another posissible solution to your problem is opening port 1723, port 47, and port 1701(thats for l2tp protocol). I have the same problem. some sites say it might work others say it won't so my advice is "Keep on reading and keep on trying until it works because in IT "NO" isn't The awnser to any qeustion.

Good luck,

I have done some research on VPN servers. It appears to be a protocol that needs to be forwarded to the server not a port. VPN uses this protocol to make an maintain a tunnul connection. If you didn't forward this protocol to the server it should establish a connection over port 1723 or 1701 which are for l2tp and pptp, then when you send your account settings the tunnel isn't made because the router stops the protocol. So in order to connect your pc using vpn, the router on the servers side needs to forward protocol 47 (GRE) to the VPN server. It should work for you to...

hi michael,

i follow your instructions and opened the ports 1701, 1723, and 47 but still no VPN.
i'm using xp home as vpn server, connecting
from xp pro, using alcatel speedtouch usb adsl modem. connecting from internal networks works fine. even if i turned off
the ICS, it still won't let the connection through. however, netstat -a shows a connection is being made to port 1723
....

any suggestions will be much appreciated
