Solved Cannot connect to proxy server in Windows 7?

February 16, 2011 at 03:50:15
Specs: Windows Vista

Have nearly new desktop running Windows 7 and cannot connect to Internet (BT broadband in wireless mode). Error message says 'cannot connect to proxy server'. Any help as to how I can get out of this would be really appreciated. Not too technical!
Thanks

Why is it set to go though a proxy, in the first place? That doesn't sound right.

Hi, thanks for your reply. I don't know. It is odd, as I can receive and send emails, but cannot access the internet. I'm not sure what a proxy server is. I checked LAN settings, and have a proxy address, but it doesn't mean anything to me, but then I'm not a technical person, only a general user. I'm doing this note from a laptop, as obviously I can't get onto the I/N. I'm using BT broadband, and it must be working, as re emails. Any suggestion as to what I can do to get my desktop working with the I/N? would be appreciated.

I really don't know how BT works but my guess is that if you delete the proxy, it will be OK. What is the name or IP address of the proxy? Let's see who owns it. If it doesn't belong to BT, I have no idea why it's there.

Hi - many thanks for your reply. I have disabled the proxy server setting on my LAN settings and it now seems to work. I don't know what caused this, but it seems to have been since my last windows 7 update. I think I'll uncheck automatic updates from m'soft.
Thanks again for trying to help.
