Cannot connect to NETWORK

I'm having some problems getting one of my computers to work on my network. This is what I have:

-Linksys 4-port router w/switch
-1 linksys hub

I originally have 5 computers working perfectly on the router (all win98, 2 via the hub, 5 directly connected to the router). I'm trying to add one more computer(win2000) to the network. The cables that I'm using work and so does the NIC card. "obtain IP address automatically" is activated. This computer is connected via the hub. It detects the network; the lights on the NIC light up, I can even see 2 other computers under network neighborhood in explorer. But when I click on these computers, it says something like "path not found". Also, I cannot ping these visible computers.

When checking network configurations (ipconfig /all), I'm getting some random IP address. DHCP is enabled. I tried releasing and renewing, but same IP address comes up all the time.

Can anyone tell me what could be going wrong or know how to fix this problem?

Ian

How do you know for sure the Network card and cable are working?
Try pinging the loopback address, 128.0.0.1, if you get a response the NIC is probably working. I would try replacing the cable.
Are you sure the hub is working? I would switch to another port on the hub, or connect directly to the router.

You might have a second device giving out ip addresses on the network. router and/or hub maybe responsable.

Yes the cables work and so does the NIC. I tried the cables on another computer that is WORKING on the network. I know the NIC works because I had it on a network in my apartment just two days ago, also the lights on the NIC light up. I can ping myself, just can't ping the router or anyone one else on the network. Although I can see two of the computers on the network, but cannot access them...under network neighborhood it will say "network path not found" when double clicking on a PC. The hub and router do work, because I have other computers running perfectly thru them.

I could be wrong, but I think it's not getting to the DHCP server.

Are you getting a 169.x.x.x address on each computer?, if your not getting to the DHCP addresses..

If your computers are windows 2000 or XP, you will have to enable "netbios over tcp/ip" in order for all computers to see each other over the network.

To do this in xp or 2000 just right click on your local area connection (within "my network places"), click "properties" double click "internet protocol tcp/ip", click "advanced", then click the "WINS" tab. From there you need to click the "enable netbios over tcp/ip" button.

This will work as long as there are no other issues with your hardware.

In windows 95, 98, and ME, this setting is usually enabled by default.

Hope this helps someone.
