I got my network hooked up and running finally.
Thanks to this forum!!
Ok here it is.
I have two computers connected with a crossover cable I made myself.
I can share files but I can't ping either comp.
Installed NetBEUIand TCP/IP into both.
Set to client for microsoft networks.
Enabled file and printer sharing.
Set access control to share-level
Shared the hard drives.
Set 2nd comp ip add. to 192.168.0.1 subnet mask to 255.255.255.0
I can ping the 2nd to it self.
The 1st comp is my everyday machine. I left the ip add unchanged.
I'm running WinMe on both.
I have a d-link nic in one and a netgear in the other. BUT the netgear in my main comp in the device manager it’s a linksys. I wonder why that is?? But it has worked fine for the past 8 months
So what am I doing wrong??
One more thing..Do I have to reboot everytime when I switch from the crossover cable to my cable modem ?Cause you know I’ve been doing a lot of that lately .
Just one more I can download files from either comp. But I can’t upload or delete files.Where can I fix that??
ANY HELP would be APPRECIATED GREATLY!!
THANKS
Rick

sounds like your sharing thru NetBEUI. What are the IP seetings of your 1st computer? Set your second to the same, except the last octect should be different. Once you can bing, remove NetBEUI.

Yes, you will have to reboot when connecting back to the cable modem, b/c the PC recieves a dynamic ip address from the cable co. A easy fix is to get a Netgear RT314 router. It will allow you to share the cable modem for both computers, and provide security from the internet as well..

In order to move files to the other machine, you will have to set permissions on the recieving folders to "full access".
Right click on the file or folder, sharing, punch in full access password.

Thanks for the help!!
I fixed the problem with pinging, I had the first ip 24.***.***.47 and the second at 192.168.0.1.
I changed the second ip to 24.***.***.48 and it fixed that!!
Now I just need to setup file sharing properly and I'll be all set. WELL until I get my linksys router.
I hope that project goes smoothly.
I'm sure I'll here with more questions.
THANKS for the help!!!
