I have two PCs, one has Windows 98 and the other has Windows 2000. Both are connected through Linksys DSL Router. I can sucessfully browse internet on both, they have also unique IP addresses, while I have kept the default gateway as 192.168.1.1 (as recommended by Linksys). I can ping between the two computers but I can not map the drives from each other so that could share the files.
Earlier I had Windows 2000 on both and there was no problem but since I installed Win 98 on one of them, I am not able to map. I have tried almost everything, like making the files shareable, creating a user acount with same name on each...any idea or solutions?

I have a simular problem linking my XP PC to my old win98 PC. The green light is ON both, each recognize the other exists but still I'm unable to map the directories on each. Good Luck, let's see what other options there are.

Are they both in the same workgroup/domain? Are the IP addresses in the same range as the router and all have the same subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 ?
For instance....
Router ........... 192.168.1.1
Computer one ..... 192.168.1.2
Computer two ..... 192.168.1.3

Yes, they are. Though the IP addresses are bit confusing now. Earlier, when I used to have both on Windows 2000, the IP addresses were automatically allocated as 192.168.1.100 and 192.168.1.101. But since I installed Windows 98 on one of them, the 192.168.1.101 has disappeared and now it has automatically picked up 192.168.1.119 (may be because of DHCP, but fail to understand why did it pick up earlier in sequence and not now..!).
Here is further what I did. I installed again Windows 2000. It still has 192.168.1.119 as it's IP address and both of them are fine with each other now, I mean they can map directories etc.
However, I still have Windows 98 on that and when I go back in 98 things go bizarre!
BTW, can someone explain to me how this Linksys DSL router work? Where does it keep information about PCs?

Yes, they are. I guess Windows 98 is already RIP, so no one pays any attention. I too don't care much but I have my CD-writer, which can only run on Windows 98, so have to live with Windows 98, so that files could be transferred on this PC (with 98) and burn my CD, else who cares for Windows 98 anyway! So guys, please think of people like us, who care for Windows 98 for some more time to come..!
