Hey if anyone could give me some
colaborative informaton on this I would
appreaciate it. My basic question is can
my ISP detect or view what sites I view or
surf? I recently changed ISP'S to my
universities free PPP-dail-up service, I
belive the server that i connect ot is a
UNIX v-5.1 and i use Konqueror and I.E.,
sometimes, to surf. Needless to say I don't
want my school to know every site I visit
and such. so i would like to know if they
have a cach of sites that i visit or what,
I am not familiar w/ how ISP servers
operate.
Thank you in advance.

They can, if they want too. There are many ways:

1.) Internet caching files on your computer
2.) Proxy server
3.) Sniffers/Protcol analyzers
4.) Syslogs ( Many kinds )

So to answer your question, YES they can.

Yes they can and they're allowed to use it against you only if you're an employee abusing it while at work, but what you do at home is your business. If the university has restricted sites, they should have filtered them already.

Well, i wonder, if you used some kind off anonymous proxy service, and surf the web using it while your ISP uses another proxy, are they able to tell what sites you surf then? Because you don't use their proxy then, but reroute the traffic through another computer...

With an anonymous proxy, all your traffic would go through their server as directed to the proxy (as though you were surfing just that particular site). Check out www.multiproxy.org for a freeware program that runs locally and directs outgoing traffic to an open proxy server- there's a setting to use only anon proxies.
Of course, this will not prevent monitoring of traffic coming into your computer.
PS- While employers can monitor usage, they are not the only ones, and not just for abuse. Even Gates got caught out and had to read an email memo in open court.

If you're not going to do it, email me by removing the senseless request and invalid ending.

sign up for a ssh service. Nobody will know what sites are you surfing as the traffic between your PC and ssh server will be encrypted.
