OS: Win98SE
CPU/Ram: Sony Vaio Laptop
Comment:

Am using Win98SE (or one of my users is)... and am able to browse network.. but unable to access 'net.. via cable or modem.

Also get page cannot be displayed. Unable to put IP's to try to connect to..but can browse network and shares just fine..

Confusing.. this is on a sony viao... did manage to clear up reg setting to allow setup of new inet connection.

So how do I fix Win98SE Laptop to browse 'Net??? I'm using Linksys Router..but user was connectedd direct to cable modem.

Any help would be great!!

sounds like dns issue. make sure the computer points to correct dns. or use nslookup command to check dns status.

If you are using a router, then the address of the router needs to be added to the TCP/IP properties, where it has the option for a "Default Gateway".

If this is NOT the problem then msg back, since a network is a network, your computer doesn't know the difference if it's a local, or internet, or WAN

tried it off the router too w/ dialup.. and no dice.. but works great on the network... but just no 'net.

Could a virus knock out the 'net and leave the network?? DNS Settings were fine. Modem works fine.. it just won't go anywhere..strange.. I hadn't had a chance to try the nslookup to see if it reports differently..but I have a feeling it won't.

Thanks for all your replies..hopefully we can get this hammered down.

Sorry but know luck on this.. :(

Had to reformat the drive... I could ping IP's..but nothing else. Everything works now.

Any other ideas that might have worked?? Apparently..whatever happened also disabled the modem from working?? weird..very weird.

I tried this fix..

and no luck either.
