Im having a problem getting my cable modem to work through my nic. It works fine through usb, but i would like to use it in Linux also. When i connect it with my nic the lights on the back of the modem indicate it is connected properly, but i cant acces the internet and when i try to renew with winipcfg it freezes. Ive tried with three different nics, one being onboard, with no luck. In System Properties it shoes that the nic is working. Also, possibly irrelevant, in the network options it says not present for the network address on my card.
The modem is a motorola sb4200 and the nic is a dlink dfe-530tx. Operating system is win98se. Any help is appreciated.

I would try a different network card. I have the same card and it sucks with win98se or at least it did on my computer.
It worked fine with 95 though. But if you want to keep it try removing all properties in network neighborhood and removing it in device manager then reboot. Use the disk that came with it to install drivers or better yet see if they have an updated driver at dlink. If you need a copy of driver disk I have one.

I think you should have to remove all usb drivers for the modem too.

I have the same modem also and instructions for it also. Depending on your cable suscriber you may have to enter your setup disk from them and set up second computer option, I have insightbb.com and had to do this to get my router workin.
I think Insight and others require their software when you change nic's or change from usb to nic & vice versa.

I have a belkin F5D5000 card and it seems to work ok.

Thnaks, but i have it figured out finally.
I read another post that mentioned rebooting the modem after switching to a nic from usb and that worked for me.
