Hi, I am going to be moving in a few weeks and plan on buying a cable modem. I will be living with one other person with there own computer.
How do we need to split up the cable to each computer? Do we need a router, or can we use a hub? If either will work what are the advantages and disadvantages of each method?
If a router is needed, will we run into problems with IP's such has for hosting multiplayer gamed or a FTP? Do both split the bandwidth evenly or will one PC be favored depending on its port to the hub or router?
I have no experience cable modems so any help in this situation will be much appreciated. Thanks
Alastor

"Do we need a router, or can we use a hub?"
Hub no, Router yes, or you can set one of the 2 PCs as software router. The only part of doing that is the other pc is dependent on that one for internet connection. So if that "router" PC is off, then the 2nd PC can not access the net. I recommend hardware router
"If a router is needed, will we run into problems with IP's such has for hosting multiplayer gamed or a FTP?"
No, provided you set the router to forward correct ports, see router manual.
"Do both split the bandwidth evenly"
In theory, yes
"will one PC be favored depending on its port to the hub or router?"
No
