Specs: Windows XP
I want to hook up a 24 port switch to a cable router which is hooked up to my cable modem. Does the switch have to be managed or unmanaged? What is the recommended switch model I should use?

It doesn't matter, whether the switch is managed or unmanaged.
Current routers supports Auto-MDI(X) (Auto Uplink), so that you can simply use an ordinary LAN cable to connect the router to the switch.

Managed are a whole lot more expensive than unmanaged. Also, I highly doubt you have any real requirement for a managed switch so save your $$$ and buy an unmanaged switch.

While most every modern switch and router are auto MDIX capable, it's still recommended you use a crossover cable to connect them as it's one less thing to have to worry about should you ever need to troubleshoot the connection.
