cable modem with two computers

Acces internet with motorola cable modem 4200 USB connected with two different computers running both W98SE. One computer connected with UTP cable and one with USB cable both coming from this cable modem.Acces internet with each computer no problem but the other one must be shut down.Both computers runnig blocks my internet. Question=both computers same time on internet?

I have a router that will also run in this confguration but have never actually done so. I have the UTP cable going to a hub and the USB is unused. I'll have to try it one day and see how it works.
One thing that comes to mind. Do you have the IP addresses of your two computers configured manually. If so I would try setting them to obtain IP address automatically. See if that works.

I would connect one to the internet w/ the USB and use a Cat 5 crossover cable (research it) to connect the two computers together and share the internet. or get a router
