I have a cable modem, and want to set up a network.
Since I won't need my router to be a modem as well, can I use any router to connect my modem to?

Make sure that there isnt a built in modem in the router and then it would be simple to set up

So I could use any router as long as it's not a modem too?
And then I just use normal network cables to connect the modem,router, and pc's together?

Short answer; it doesn't matter. A router is a router. if it has a built-in modem you just disable or ignore this. Connect the cable modem to the WAN port of the router and off you go.
Longer answer: Of course, if your network is wireless you'll need a wireless router, if you're on Ethernet you'll need a wired router. A router with a Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) firewall and VPN is better than a simple NAT router but costs a bit more. But if there's a modem built into the router, too, you can use it or not as you see fit.

Dont go wireless yet.. even tho it is gettin quite popular.. mainly because it can be so simple to get into a wireless network.
