im running abyss web server 1.2.0 beta2, i have a rca dcm245 modem through comcast, dlink di-604 router, 3com 3c510 switch (all pcs on the network are win98se), and a really annoying problem.

recently my cable modem has been resetting any time me or someone else tries to access my site (through its ip address, i dont have a domain). if you type the ip into the url box in ie it will take you there, everything loads fine, then when you click around and redirected to other pages within the same site my modem resets several or one time. im not sure if this is classified as a normal "reset" but the lights that turn solid are email, activity, and cable; power and pc link go off, then they all blink a bunch of times and its connected again. sometimes it will reset once, sometimes it resets many times. WHY?

i have gone to aprelium.com (makers of abyss web server) and posted on the boards asking why it does that. all they can say is abyss webserver doesnt do anythign with an internet connection and doesnt even know you have one.

"The modem can be reset due to several reasons: The modem driver could be buggy, your ISP can force a reset it after you upload a certain amount of data (some ISPs will do this to prevent people from running their own servers), or your phone/cable line is noisy, or have technical problems"

i have also called comcast and all they can say is that its a network problem and refuse to answer any further questions reguarding networking because technically your not supposed to have them or something.

so no help from comcast, no help from aprelium, can anyone here help me?

im sure theres not a problem with the modem since when i turn the webserver off, or nobody is accessing the server, the modem is fine.

also, spybot s&d, adaware6, spywareblaster, and nav2001 detected nothing

First off, hosting a web server using just your ip address is not a wise thing to do. I would suggest at least getting a Dynamic DNS solution such as from No-Ip.com or the others that are out there. This will 'hide' your IP address and also keep the website running by monitoring what IP address your ISP assigns you (as sometimes the lease times expire and it changes your IP address).

Now... as for the random resets.. it is possible they are on to your hosting a web server and they keep resetting your connection intentionally. Most cable providers (as well as DSL providers) don't want you to host web servers or any kind of servers on your connection as it could mean you sucking up bandwidth and potentially cause problems with other people in your area. An easy (and also smart) way to avoid this is to not use port 80 as the web server or port 21 as an FTP server. Use a different port and just set up the port forwarding in the router's configuration to the computer's IP address that is hosting the server.

Also... I would suggest using a port that is not a commonly scanned port by hackers either... something higher than 135 or so -- you have up to 65535 to choose from.

Hopefully this helps. I also use Abyss as well as Apache and both run fine on my cable modem connection, but I don't use standard ports either.
