I have a cable modem at home connected to my PC. I called my ISP to also connect my laptop so that I can switch back and forth for internet connectivity. How do I connected the two of them at the same time? Do a need a router or a hub and a couple crossover cables?

You are in the same situation that I was in. I used a router/switch combo and cat 5 cables. If you want a dedicated line to your pc and laptop, use a switch or router/switch combo.
Hope that helps

If you are only paying for one IP address (ie you have one modem) then you have to purchase a router to allow both computers to use the internet. A switch cannot perform network address translation, which is necessary to provide this functionality.

You dont need a router or switch or hub to share internet access between 2 computers using a cable modem. All you need is to make sure one computer has 2 lan cards installed and alength of crossover cable.
