Cable modem problems :S

I done ping google.com and 2 of the 4 packets sent were lost.. which is obviously a problem. my internet has been running crazyly slowly lately.

I'v looked around for a solution.. but its all abit confusing to me.

Using http://192.168.100.1/

I found out my cable modem has been having connection errors and stuff:

I heard something about MAC address in XP doesnt set propperly for network cards.. tho i have no clue what this really means =P

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Your first stop should be to call your providers technical support.

You can't fix a modem that isn't giving your pc a ip address.

Assuming this is the full story. Like you didn't change the pc the modem was originally setup with?

Nothing wrong with XP and mac addresses. Your info is incorrect in that xp doesn't set the mac address of a nic card. What you may be referring to is setting the mac address when setting up a router which connects to the modem but that isn't the case here from what you write.

What do you mean "isnt giving my PC an IP address?"

Nothing changed since i first installed it over 2 months ago, went thru the normal CD setup stuff and was away. Modems only ever been used on this computer. Ta for help :)

The internet runs on a protocol called tcp/ip. Your workstation has to have an ip address [192.168.1.x for example] to connect to the internet.

DHCP is a way to autoassign an ip address to a pc.

Those messages above indicate an error getting that ip address.

First step usually is to unplug, wait 5 seconds and replug the power back into the modem. This reinitializes the modem.

Then, after a minute or two, you turn on your pc where it then goes and requests a dhcp supplied ip from the modems provider [usually the modem just passes the dhcp request thru to the ISP's dhcp server but some can assign ip by themselves].

You can check what your ip address is by going to a cmd prompt and typing in "ipconfig" without the "".

If you don't get an ip address you can't get on the internet. At which point you call your ISP/Modem provider and complain.

Ohh i can get on the internet and i am getting an IP address.. obviously :P

I'v just done a speed test and my connections running at only 500kb/s when it should be 2MB.

Is there anything on my end i could do?

oh i should add iv got no spy/adware viruses and no firewall running :)

Just done another test and my MS is over 280 :|

Speed is under 400kbps now.. dunno whats causing all this.

Iv only got 1gig left on my harddrive.. if thats any relevance? :S other than that my comps running perfect.
