I would like to know how I could share my internet connection between two computers. I have internet by means of a cable company, so I have a cable modem (Webstar, Scientific Atlanta) which has USB and Ethernet outs. At present it is installed in my main computer by Ethernet. I also have another computer in the kids room, which I want to connet to the internet too. I know it is possible to use the same cable modem and from it to send the Ethernet signal to a ¿hub? ¿switch? ¿router? (I am not sure) and then from it feed the two computers.
The main questions for me are:
¿it is possible with that setup to power on at any time just only one computer (any of the two) and have internet without the hassle of keep a computer always on?¿the information like historial, web pages visited, cookies, etc. from any computer also it is saved in the another or it is transmitted to the other (because of the switch, hub, router, etc.)? I do not want that if I visit a web page with mature content, the same page exists in the kid's computer.
¿if so, what is the best device (hub, switch, router, etc.) to get sure minimum or no interaction between the two computers?
Thank you very much for your help.

the internet information stored on one computer never gets transferred to another computer unless you manually do it yourself, although im not sure why someone would do that lol..
to connect both computers to the same cable modem, youll need a router.

Just make sure the router you buy has SPI in the firewall function. Virtually every router I've seen in the last year has it, but just make sure it's in there.
"Republicans in Congress are moving to ratify a constitutional amendment to ban flag burning, thus ending the Iraq insurgency."

you have to do a router because you need something that will pick up the IP from the cable modem and then disperse it to your clients, no hubs or switches will do that
upon choosing a router and setting it up ensure that you enable MAC cloning, due to the fact that a lot of cable companies will not allow more than one MAC address to connect to their network...by enabling MAC cloning you can clone the MAC of your modem and then connect all your machines to the router VIA cat5 cable
And like posted above, no information will be transfered between the two automatically...for proper comminication, file/printer sharing you will have to put both machines on the same workgroup, and add a user and password that are the same in each machine...then setup sharing on the machines and then manually you can share your files and printers...
