I have an internet connection coming in to a Motorola Surfboard SB4100 cable modem, from which I connected a NR041 LinkSys 4 port Cable/DSL router. To the router I connected computers running Mandrake Linux 9, Slackware 9, Windows XP Pro and a laptop with WinXP Home. Everything functioned properly.

I purchased a D-Link DI-614+ Wireless broadband router so that I can give mobility to the laptop. Unfortunately, I cannot obtain a connection with the D-Link router.

I've followed their installation instructions, as well as information found on their support site and even cycled the cable modem, all with no success. Finally I called their tech-support phone number.

Connecting the router to the modem, and the laptop to the router (with the ethernet cable, not wireless Cardbus) we were still unable to obtain a connect.

I can connect to the administration interface of the router from the laptop, which says DHCP Client is connected. The support person asked me to perform a DHCP release and renew; the renew timed out.

He even had me reverse the cable (so that the end that was connected into the router was connected into the modem, and viceversa).

Even if I connect the laptop directly to the cable modem I cannot resolve a connection. ipconfig /renew yields: An error occured while renewing the inerface Local Area Connection: The DHCP client has obtained an IP address that is already in use on the network. The local interface will be disabled untl the DHCP client can obtain a new address.

If I return the connections as I had them previously with the Linksys router everything functions properly and I am able to obtain a connection.

Does anyone have any ideas as to why my DCHP renew is failing (I'm assuming it wasn't properly released, though I specifically released it and it said the release was successful), and how I can swap the routers?

Or, another possible idea is to 'not tempt fate' and connect the D-Link router to the Linksys router (I'm not even sure what the configuration would be like, let alone if it's even possible... I have some basic network training but I'm not a guru)?

Thanks in advance,

-Tim

Have you tried using static IP addresses for each computer on your LAN?

(Incidentally, I have a wireless router and wireless card, and I've had problems under XP Pro with my wireless card getting an IP address via DHCP--my router log would show a DHCP assignment, but I wouldn't get an IP address on the computer... Static/Manual IP configs work fine.)
