I'm about to pull my hair out of my head because of my problems with my new cable internet service. I'm just curious, as we have one of these in our neighborhood; could a HAMM radio cause enough interference in the cable line to screw up a cable internet connection? Charter is supposed to have a look at our problem (for a second time), and as I need internet NOW, not IN TWO DAYS, I'm hoping to figure out what it might be on my own. I already know the reason is the signal isn't strong enough, so if its interference then maybe I can walk up the street and ask the owner of the radio to turn it off when I need to use the net.

We are Microsoft; resistance is futile.

I stronly doubt if his shortwave set will have any effect on your cable connection.

I use Road Runner cable and there is a Ham radio tower within 60 feet of my back door. Never had a problem of any kind from his unit.

in practice electrical noise is not generated by microwave emitors. Check If the cabling is ok. A defective connector or a high-power line is enough to ruin your connection. Ask your ISP to check if the connection to your modem is ok. This would take 2 minutes because they should have 24 h support. If Yes the ,,cat is in your backyard " and you should give more info: what modem do you have , what type of router (if any) etc

You mention "I already know the reason is the signal isn't strong enough"

With cable the 'signal strength' doesn't really come into play. With cable you have a signal (connectivity) or you don't.

Out of curiosity; what is the problem?
What symptoms?

Check your cable connections:
1. If you have more than one splitter in the line to your modem, change things around so that you have only one.
2. Make sure that one splitter is high quality (5 to at least 1000 mhz, "gold", not "silver").
3. Loosen all connections and then reconnect securely.
4. Go outside and remove all the rust from where the cable company's cable connects to the one that enters your house. [This is what fixed my sudden loss of internet service last fall.]
After you get a solution let us know what the problem was and how it was fixed.

Well, for a second time Charter sent out a technician and this time he found the problem. It turns out a few years ago a tree fell on our lines, breaking the cable line. So, the cable company put a connector on the end and an extender, then ran a cable from that into our house. That would work fine, except apparently lightning struck the extender, completely frying the connectors on the outside cable. We got new connectors and haven't had a problem since.

We are Microsoft; resistance is futile.
