Hey, so here's my problem: my parents have DSL, i have cable. i just got cable and we had our computers networked to share the DSL, but now i have my own internet connection (which is by the way approximately 5x faster) and i still want to be able to be networked. so i put in another NIC and now Windows is having problems. I want to set it up so that my onboard lan connects to the internet through my cable modem and so that the plugNplay nic connects to the lan. how do i make this work? thanks in advance ::tim

the problem is that in windows xp in the network setup wizard, it asks if you connect to the internet through another computer, if other computers connect through you, or other.. well none of the above apply b/c i dont want to use the network to connect to the internet. i want to use the internet for file sharing.. i have my own internet connection that does not need to be shared..

Configure the one NIC for the internet connection and the other for the LAN. If you don't enable ICS on the internet connection your PC won't attempt to share the internet with the LAN side.

I fixed it.

I kept my onboard connection the way it was for the cable connection and then i plugged the extra NIC and my parents computer into the hub. then i plugged the hub into the router and when i created the new connection for the 2nd NIC, i went to set up a home or small office network and then it gives you like this computer connects directly to the internet, this computer connects to the internet through another computer, and other. i chose other and then i chose the option that the network doesn't have an internet connection.. something to that effect. and now file sharing works and my internet works :)
