Cable connection thru router

My roommate and I have recently started sharing one cable connection thru a router. We have a wired modem and we both use 98se. I have seen a huge reduction in the download speed for both small and big files. Prior to this change, my download speed was over 125ks, and now, i'm lucky if i get it at 25ks. This happens even if i'm the only one using the connection. Is there any configuration or tweak that will remedy this? Would having a separate ip address assigned to us help with the speed?

Both computers need to have a different IP address. Is your router using DHCP? (Meaning is your router giving you the IP address)
Can you give us the IP addresses for both computers. To do that on a 98 box type in at a DOS/command prompt;
winipconfig
press enter.

We are using DHCP. My ip address is 192.168.1.111 and her ip is 192.168.1.110 which were assigned by the router.

That looks correct. Did your speed problems just start happening or is this something that has always happened since you got your router? What type of router is it?

Linksys BEFSR81 can do 10Mbps on the WAN port and 10Mbps or 100Mbps on the LAN.
First I would make sure that you the latest firmware for that router. Log into your router and go to Administration (I think) and click on Upgrade firmware or somthing like that or go to Linksys web site.
I can't really remember how 98 has there but go to Device Manager \ Network Adapter and double click on your adapter. Go to the advanced tab and and look at your "Link Speed". Try to increase it if its low or auto.
