I own 2 low speed thinkpads and would like to build up an offline network, just for office applications.

You just want to network the two thinkpads with each other? All you need for that is a couple of pcmcia network cards and a crossover ethernet cable.

To add additional computers to the network, you will need a switch. This performs the same basic function as a hub, but much more efficiently. From your point of view, this means "faster".
