Browsers unable to reach web

April 17, 2009 at 03:24:19
Specs: WindowsXP

running WinXP Home on Dell Dim E520 which was recently restored to factory delivery setup (via ctl-f11 at boot and restore)

I was able to get everything working, including access to internet but then during removal of unused AOL s/w I am suddenly unable to reach the internet with my browsers.

From a cmd prompt, I am able to

and also to ping the given address. However, when I enter the IP address into the browser nothing happens (it reports "waiting for reply")

Networking on the WinXP machine appears fine as from the cmd prompt I can telnet onto some LInux servers on my internal network.

Additionally, my internal router/gateway @ (which I can ping) has a web maintainence page but even using this IP in the web browsers don't work.

Can anyone help?!?

You could try a

netsh winsock reset catalog

it has been know to work wonders.

It is your browser settings. See network settings in brower.

"Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, antivirus, anti-spyware, Live CD's, backups, are in my top 10

I accidentally found the solution and cause.

Even though I had disabled the windows firewall, McAfee was running in the background - when McAfee's firewall was disabled everything was fine.

Needless to say, McAfee was soon removed and AVG free installed.
