You have to run Win98 Second Edition, W2k, or WinXP to use 2 computers (or more) using ICS (internet connection sharing).

Or you have to buy a seperate hardware device, like a upgraded modem with what is called NAT (network adderss translation).

Without either NAT or ICS you cannot share the internet with 2 (or more computers). Other than getting a completly different IP address for each PC.

Buy a Linksys router for around $79. It's a piece of cake to set up & it's more reliable than ICS (Internet Connection Sharing). You can setup the router to use DHCP, (Obtain an IP address automatically) or set it up with a static(permanent) IP address if you were given one. If you use Enternet 300 or WinPoet (most DSL does)to get online, you can uninstall that crap & set up the router to take care of the connection for you as well.

Check out:

http://www.dslreports.com

http://www.practicallyneworked.com - sharing section.

Both cover it all in great detail.

The D-Link 701 (access router) gets good reviews; the SMC Barricade similarly (and it includes a printer sharing option too; and also dial-up sharing); Netgear are also reported as pretty good. Tend to avoid Lnksys - too many adverse comments about some of their kit...

Or you can opt for a Linsys Wireless 4 port router.

Allows for both wired for your PC's and wireless for your laptop...

I love it!! though at a pricy 249 for the router and 129 for the wireless NIC for the laptop....
