I'm gettin my broadband modem tommorow to connect to 1mb connection. Really excited.

have a desktop (thats what will connect to modem) and laptop (considering buying wifi card).

would like to know how to set up so my laptop can access internet via desktop. i'm lookin into wireless. And if desktop is connected to wireless router, would i need wireless device for my desktop as well or connected wireless router would do. I also assume modem will connect to the router, right.

any suggestion on wireless devices (linksys or netgear) and how to go about installing it.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Since you need to buy a Wi-Fi card for your laptop, I'd suggest going with the wireless G spec.

Just get a Wireless-G router and a WiFi-G card for your laptop. Most wireless routers come with a 4-port wich, so you can attatch your Desktop to the router with cat5 cable. Or, if you want, you can purchase a PCI wireless card for your desktop too. But, you will most likely need to connect a computer through cat5 initially to configure the router

WiFi is not yet a very reliable comincation method ! For a good connection i would suggest a broadband router (like edimax 640 P) wich costs 30-60 usd . This way you will be able to share your modem conncetion up to 253 users . Wireless bridge in your desktop betwin UTP net card and wifi one will require your desktop to be ON in order to acces from the latop :( .

That is great, you should make sure you have Anti-Virus (AVG has a free home edtion) , Anti-spyware, (Spywareblaster)(Adaware) and there are others, then make sure you have a firewall and it works right. to test your system visit www.auditmypc.com and walk thru every test..

What do you base this on? WiFi has been around for several years and many large organizations use it internally.

"Wireless bridge in your desktop betwin UTP net card and wifi one will require your desktop to be ON in order to acces from the latop"

If WiFi is unreliable, why would you suggest bridging between the desktop and the laptop? It would just be easier to network them both through the router.

Thanks all, great to get so much feedback in short time. I think i will settle with wireless router/access point connected to my desktop. And my laptop will use wi-fi card. I have looked at wireless and favour Linksys.

Cheers.
