Right, that's why you're here asking for help with getting SAMBA and bonjour to work properly across your VPN.
And I'm not about to go buy a multi-thousand dollar router.
Actually, you don't have to spend thousands to have a good VPN endpoint which is why I pointedly asked wanderer what he uses. If I'm not mistaken, the equipment he uses is relatively speaking, inexpensive, but ever so much better at creating a VPN than a SOHO router with DD-WRT on it. It wouldn't surprise me in the least to find out DD-WRT is the problem.
As for Bonjour, I'm not familiar with it so I can say. To be honest, I avoid apple products whenever possible as they tend to not play well with the other vendors' equipment.
But I can, have, and do connect to SAMBA shares across a VPN from a windows box. Doing so shouldn't require any special settings that I can think of any more than connecting to a Windows based share should. Once you have properly established a VPN, SAMBA shares on the remote site should behave exactly like a SAMBA share on the local network.
It matters not how straight the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate;
I am the captain of my soul.
