Blown ethernet cards in 2pc network?

Hello,

I'm trying to network two PCs directly with no hub, using a crossover cable.

(Desktop and Thinkpad 760ED laptop)
-Win98 and Win 98SE,
-3Com ethernet card and Farallon pn595a pcmcia card,

Both cards workED fine. I wired the crossover cable wrong as a mirror image (i.e., pin 1 as pin 8, etc.). Luckily, the pcmcia card has only wires 1236 physically present in its adaptor cable.

Could this have ruined both cards? 1236 are only +-TX/RX lines.... The adaptor is now correct.

Here is the setup:
-IP addresses: 192.168.0.1/2
-Subnets 255.255.255.0
-Same domain name
-Different computer names
-TCP/IP bindings for Client for Microsoft Networks, and File and Printer Sharing For MS Networks.
-In Device Manager, the cards appear fine.

IPX/SPX, NetBEUI, TCP/IP are all bound in the Network Adaptors.

I could NOT ever ping the other computer. I can only get the computer to ping itself, of course.
Before, both computers were in their own Network Neighborhood (even when the crossover adaptor was wrong). Now, neither is present. Only properties for the dial-up adaptors were changed, which should not be related.

This is the first time I am trying to set a network up, so does anyone have any suggestion/instructions to get this connection to work? I thought this setup was correct...

Thank you
Paul

Unless you have specific need for IPX/SPX (ie: a game that requires it) I recommend removing it.

To test your NIC to see if it's working ping your computer first by it's computer name and then by the loopback address:

examples:
ping 98se (where 98se is the computer name you've given the PC)

ping 127.0.0.1

Pinging a computer this way will tell you if your NIC is bad or if your TCP/IP stack is having problems. If you get no reply's then the NIC is likely bad. If possible, pull it out and try another NIC in the PC and see if it works.
