I would like to know id there is anyone out there who can tell me how I can block open ports on my work computer without using a firewall?

The only way to block ports without a firewall is to use a router. A router will only open ports that you allow. Other than that you have to use a firewall.

Why the reluctance to use a firewall? Should be standard equipment on every computer that has access to the Internet. Stops the hackers from hi-jacking computers for DOS attacks.

Thanks for your reply, I just don't want a particular person being able to set up a remote desktop connection to my computer.

I think that remote desktop connection is run through port 3388. So logically I thought blocking this port will block the individual.

Depending on your setup, you might be able to change your IP address to a static one and that might prevent the person from accessing it. I would change it every week or so.
