Ok here is my situation. I'm trying to connect 2 PCs using a crossover cable and ethernet cards. The server has is running Win2k and the client is running Win98. I know the two machines are connecting, because the lights on the ethernet cards are lit. The client can see both itself and the server, but when I try to access the server it asks for the password; I have no idea what this could be. It says:

Resource: \\computername\IPC$
Password: ___________________

The server only sees itself and when I search for the client it can't find it. I tried setting the IP address on the server as 192.168.0.1 and the client as 192.168.0.2 with a subnet as 255.255.255.0 on each. I also added NetBEUI protocol to each machine although my client couldn't find the netbeui.vxd file on my win98 disk so I don't know if this is even working right. Now I had both of these computers on a hub with another computer running win98 as the server before and it worked fine (atleast with sharing a internet connection which is all I really care about.) Please help. Thanks.

Chase, I guess I didn't quite understand what you meant; I'm sure it is my lack of experience in these situations. This was your post:

"Create a userid on the 2000 box, and log onto the 98 client with that userid. You don't have to use a password. Then, you'll be able to access as you like."
******************
How do you log onto the 98 client? Is the userid that you are talking about the same as the user logon that appears when you start up your computer?

"Be sure and allow the user (or the "authenticated users" group) in the sharing/file permissions."
****************
How do you do this?

Thanks for your help. I've read your other posts and they were very helpful.

When you set your client computer drives to be "shared" (click "my computer" icon, then right click on a shared drive and then click "sharing" you'll see if a password has been set. Usually, a password is required when setting a drive for full access by another computer. I always use the password "a" to keep things simple. However, your server computer cannot use the client shared drive unless you enter the correct password that you entered when you made the client drive a shared resource.

Wordy, but I hope you get the point.

OK, in 2000, double-click "My COmputer", then "Control Panel", then "Administrative Tools", then "Computer Management". Look for the tree "Users and Groups".

Under "Users" create a new user. You can create an administrator user if you like, of a normal user - your call. Assign it a password, or leave it blank. Go into the groups for the user and assign it membership in "Users" as a minimum.

On the 98 client, Start> Log Off ..., and log on with the username you just created above. Use the same password you specified above.

Now try and access the 2000 system. Should be G2G.

HTH,
Chase

Ok. I am now able to see and access the win2k machine from the win98 machine, but not the other way around. Also, I set Internet Explorer to connect via my LAN, but it's not working, in other words I don't have a shared internet connection. Any ideas? BTW, thanks for your help so far.

first of all, click start, find, computers. enter your client pc's name and see if it pops up. if it does, it means its either on another workgroup, or ive noticed if you have static ip's on some machines, they dont see the automatically set ones. this would also explain why your server cant gain internet access. if your tcp/ip properties on the card connected to the modem are set to a 192.168.xxx.xxx ip, you wont get internet info, only LAN info. so, set your modem tcp/ip properties to auto, your LAN NIC tcp/ip properties to 192.168.1.100, your client pc's ip to 192.168.1.101 and see what happens. oh yah, check your workgroup too. hope i didnt confuse you....good luck

Here’s my problem. I used to master recovery disk to restore my computer and I choose to restore it to the factory settings. When it was done. It started to setup Windows. In the process of the setup. It said it was missing a file or it was corrupted. A box came up and said to choose ignore or cancel. I tried this twice. I choose ignore first. The set up stopped and the Computer restarted. And it took me to this place. Where it gave me 6 choices. Like 1. Normal and so on. At the bottom it said to choose # 5 It said something I don’t know. So I chosed # 5. and it said at the bottom “C:/” I don’t know what to type. And it wont log me on to windows. Every time I turn it on it go to the same place. Can you help me??
