Best way to extend my internet?

Specs: Windows 7
I live in a garage that was converted into a large room. My room is about 30-50 feet away from the room with the router, but the wireless connection is terrible. This is due both to the nature of the building I'm in, and the position my PC is in. Therefore, I'd like to be connected directly to the router using an ethernet cable. I would also like to connect my xbox 360 directly, so that I can use it as a Media Center Extender. There are small holes to allow for cables coming in/out of both my room and the house.

What's the best way for me to accomplish this? Is there a way to use a "switch", or whatever they are called, to be able to plug into the network directly in my room? What's the best way?

One run of cat5 cable to the router and put a switch in your room to handle all you wish to plug into the internet/network.

So if I plug a cat5 cable from the router into a switch, anything connected to the switch will also have network access? Is there any speed detriment?
