As an older gentleman new to the marvels of networking I'm a bit gun-shy to post such a novice type question though if I don'ask I'll never learn.
I'm running Windows XP on a fairly new Dell and Gateway system and attempting to (initially) install a cable modem (BEFCMU10) and a broadband router (WRT54G).
I've connected the USB connector on the modem to the back of my computer and the system into my phone line. As far as the router is concerned I'm a bit perplexed. The back of the router has a slot for the internet and four empty slots.
The sales representative at BB refused to provide any installation support stating they sold 'advice' in the form of a home setup program.
After two wars and losing a leg I've realized life's rough though everyone has to earn a living. I still should have whacked him with my new light weight prostetic leg.

The four ports on the router are called RJ45 or ethernet ports, and there is also one on the cable MODEM .
These are the standard ports used for wiring up networks. The cables you need are called Cat5 or Cat6 (cat5 is best because its cheaper).
Just plug a wire from the RJ45 port on the modem into your PC and look in the manual for how to set up the internet access.
You may need some details from your ISP, and they should talk you through this bit.Once the internet is working on the cable modem, detatch the cable from the back of the pc and plug it into the internet port on the router.
Then attatch a second cable from one of the four extra ports on the router to the back of the PC.
Then im afraid you are at the mercy of the manual, the only help i can offer is that to access the router, you go into internet explorer and type "http://192.168.1.1" and the default password/username is "admin"
Post back on wether or not this was helpful and with any more info you have.
