ok, so we've got 3 computers connected to a netgear DG834G wireless router, one via dongle another via wireless NIC and another via a network cable. If we use a standard sagem router on one PC, it gets about 600kbps download from sites and bittorrent goes at about 200kbps . When we use the netgear, we struggle to get 40kbps between us with bittorrent (Utorrent client) and if one person is using utorrent, no one else can browse because it's so slow. We've followed the port forwarding procedure, but it seemed to make things even slower
What the freak? Please, oh please, help me.
just looking for some help...

There are other factors that could be contributing to the network slowdown you've experienced and there are a bunch of questions that I could ask.
The first thing to do is upgrade the Netgear router's firmware to the latest release (3.x) if you haven't done so already.
Netgear has fixed some speed issues in with this firmware.
Here's the link to their web site's support and firmware download page for that model.

The grass may not be greener on the other side . . . but it just might have less weeds. :-D

why are you using port forwarding? Check you havent enabled QOS on the router. in my experience SOHO router models tend to slow down a lot when you start add PAT/NAT/QOS rules to them
