Does it matter what kind of modem and wireless router to make DSL the fastest? Also is a modem with built in wireless better than having separate units? I have att Express dsl.

The hardware itself will make little difference to the DSL speed. The speed is largely determined by what your ISP gives you and factors outside of your control.

Having units combined into one box makes it easier to install as you dont have loads of wires trailing around. It makes no difference at all to performance.

The problem with one device, modem and router combo, is troubleshooting.

Usual first step is to connect directly to the modem to see if its the router having the issue.
With a combo unit you can't do that.
