Hello,
Current setup is a desktop pc and a laptop sharing a dial up connection. The desktop being the host with win xp pro installed. At the moment giving winroute a try and working well except for a small nag.My question: is it possible to assign a static ip address to the host machine similar to windows me? I have entered 192.168.0.1 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 in tcp/ip settings. What I would like is for the win xp machines lan ip to be 192.168.0.1 even if the client laptop machine is switched off. It works like this in windows me where the networking logon box will always appear. In xp only when the laptop is on will the win xp (host) be assigned a 192.168.0.1 address, else it will be 127.0.0.1. Of course this seems to mess up my internet connection, most like due to using the NAT features in winroute. To correct this I have to reboot the host. In other words I must always power on the host computer last.
I can fix this by turning NAT off in winroute, however then messenger and some other software will not work on the client.
Is it possible to have the setup like in windows me where regardless of a network you can assign a local ip address of your choice ?
Hope the post makes sense! Thanks for any help.

control panel -> netowrk connections -> lan -> properties
the tcp/ip settings will allow you to set a static IP to your network card
