i recently set up my home wireless network. However my laptop doesn't connect to my pc router/modem. Even though,wi-fi say"signal: excellent" when i click my network adapter says:"Aquiring network address".I found out that the laptop's ip was in the range of 192.168... when it was supposed to be in the range of 168 same as my pc's ip. I did ipconfig/release and then ipconfig/renew for my laptop and internet was on. Next day, after rebooting my l/top the old ip was there and couldn't connect to the internet. Both computers are set to DHCP. Any ideas?

The 168 deal is usually an Windows XP address that tells me your dhcp isn't working. APIPA is a fall back to keep workgroups connected went routers fail.

I would more question how your ISP allows you to access the intenet. Post that and then we might know more. Post the results of both machines ipconfig /all too.

I think it seems to be like there is an issue with the network cable connection in router. Can you please interchange the cable of laptop to PC and PC to laptop by without changing it in router and check. Check which one is correct. Change another one to some other slot except uplink and incoming link.

Jefro!!!

169.254.x.x is the ip address range assigned automatically if no dhcp server is found. Note the NINE in the one six nine.

Mike's ip was 168.x.x.x note the EIGHT.

Auto assigned ip relates to dhcp server not being found not nessesarily routers...

"I found out that the laptop's ip was in the range of 192.168... when it was supposed to be in the range of 168 same as my pc's ip"

Sounds like you attached to someone else's unsecured router OR you have the 192.168.x.x ip address listed in the Alternate settings of your tcp/ip config.

Did you change your routers lan ip settings? 168.x.x.x is not a usual soho dhcp assignment whereas the 192.168.x.x is.

Since you are connecting wirelessly it is normal for ipcnfig to list your wired lan card and media disconnected.

Hey Mike.

Your pc, according to ipconfig is correct. Its not a 168 address but a 192.

You are not getting wireless connection which is why the wireless card is defaulting to 169...

If you are using a WEP or WPA key for wireless it appears you have not entered that in the wireless config which means you can't authenicate to the wifi router and thereby can't get a ip address.

Review your wireless card/laptop documentation to properly configure your wireless card for the encryption you established on the router.

Hey,

You are right my pc'ips is correct. I gave my laptop this static ip address: 192.168.0.99

subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
default gateway: 192.168.0.1

dns server: 192.168.0.1

Now, it connects to the internet. I am using WPA, however when i look my w/card in my laptop under "data encryption" says "TKIP", why doesn't say "WPA"?. Is that what you mentioned before that my l/top w/card must be configured for the encryption that i established in my router? I thought my w/card will automatically read the "WPA" from my rourter. Also if i set up my w/card for encryption do i still need to have a static ip or i can forget about it? i'm saying this, cause if i take my l/top to a wi-fi spot, my internet may not work right?
my wireless card is a dell true mobile 1300.

P.S my router lan ip settings are 192.168.0.100 to 192.168.0.200
-DHCP: enabled
-There is no alternate TCP/ip settings in my laptop
