Paying computer companies to be their LAB RATS!!!! Three months ago I bought a Linksys wireless with cards. $375.00 Total. I tried to hook it up but to no avail. Hired a technician @ $32.00 an hour who said my computers was not compatible to a router. Same person built four new computers for me. Cost 1 @ $1,300.00, 3 @ $850.00 ea. Time to hook up, I thought!!!! Wouldn't work, called AOL was told my computers were outdated, called again for different tech with half a brain was told that router was junk, called again for different tech with hopefully a quarter of a brain was told that I needed to download 8.0 on all my computers to make it work. Still no luck. Hired another tech at $30.00 an hour, after two days, 18 hours and numerous calls to AOL and linksys I can get on the net but cannot go onto any secure sties or use Internet explore. Again he calls AOL and was told that Linksys was blocking their security firewall. AOL said they would not charge me a monthly charge for DSL due to the problems I was having. Got my bill this month and was charged. (Thanks AOL) BOTTOM LINE. I've been with AOL 4 years but is it time to change to Verizon or Cox cable or buy AOL'S router? I can get another DSL provider, keep my Linksys and keep AOL as my Internet provider. Hooray, that's great!!! One problem I can't sign on with multiple screen names unless I have AOL as my DSL and Internet provider and purchase their router and cards. Back to square one do I change to another company or continue to let AOL trap me into more scams that is costing me a small fortune while being their LAB RAT FOR GREED!!!! My advise to you. Buy AOL'S system if you want multiple screen names and one of the best web site pages, if you want speed and compatibility with other systems go Cox cable. Waiting for my new AOL router. Will let you know what nightmare this could turn out to be. :-( :-( :-(

When the first tech even mentioned the possibility of getting AOL to work with your system, that should have been a warning sign. :D

One of my banks is using DSL and has AOL loaded on a couple of pcs connecting through it and they don't have any problem whatsoever. Sounds like your techs just don't know what they are doing.

safewithus The problem is not with your computers or with your router at all. The problem stems from AOL and thier use of proprietary and outdated protocols on thier network. You will not be able to use a hardware router because of this. (Beleive me I tried, LOL) However a software proxy server will work just fine. You can also use a cable provider and connect through multiple connections on aol from there.

sorry - been gone - I can tell you it works through cisco routers, because that is what we are installing. I did check this weekend and they are using ver. 8 of aol through the router through DSL into Bell South NET. - Hope you were able to get it fixed without spending any more money.
