I have plenty of experience setting up routers etc with DSL. However, I do not know how to make it work with AOL as this is my first AOL DSL setup. I can make the connection work fine through a direct PC-modem setup... But not sure on the settings for the router. I called AOL to get user ID and PW for the ppoe on the router and they told me that it is possible to do but they cannot give out that information. Which I think is BS> Anyway, Can any of you guys point me in the right direction.??? Linksys befsr41 router with bell line and I believe westell modem.

Thanks in advance.

Hey what's up, i don't believe that you will ever get that information unless you hack aol, what i did was setup a computer as a server and download analogx.com proxy software and set it up as a proxy server so that it plugged into a hub and all the other computers connect to the server to get the internet connection. you can also use microsoft's ICS(internet connection sharing) if you set the server up on windows 98 SE. I couldn't get ICS to work on 2000 but i have heard that it will work on 98SE. There you go but please let me know if you ever get the router to work with the pppoe connection to work.

Same problem, but with a different router- Siemens. I spoke to tech guy at AOL and he said flat out that you must have this password to set it up, but he could not give it out. I commented that this sort of defeats the purpose of broadband and he said that it was a revenue generating scheme. Nice. He did suggest looking for the hack online. Feel free to let me know if you find it.

I am having the same problem with AOL DSL.. I have the new BroadXent Broadban Blaster hooked to a SpeedStream 2623 router.. Good luck trying to get it to work with AOL. I dont want to purchase another computer as a server and want a wireless network in my home. If anyone knows how to solve this problem let me know.. else AOL can take there lousy service and equipment and helpless gueeks and find another sucker to use there service.

Forget there revenue generating scheme. Go with str8 DSL or Str8 Cable and lower your AOL Bill to the 14.95 plan and let aol eat that. Greddy little F^&*%^^. thats what they get... Nice revenue generating scheme hahaha.. Scare all your paying customers off of your AOL broadband... ok im out...

Does AOL have more than PPPoE for authentication? If it is just PPPoE there are routers that will connect, (sorry don't know models and brands off hand) but honestly, it would be cheeper just to set up a Linux box with IP masquerading, hook it up to a hub on one end and the DSL on the other, (there are several linux PPPoE clients available) if AOL doesn't use true PPPoE, I guess you might be out of luck.
If you are a human, if figure you can figure out to remove no spam from my email address, if you arn't you won't be able to send me email.

Same thing here. I have the Broadband Blaster DSL modem from AOHELL and a Gigafast EE400-RP. I wanted to get my wife's computer online also.... Unfortunatly I bought her computer for an inexpensive price but have to sign on with AOL for 2yrs. So I thought the DSL would be great. NOT, those guys need to find out a little something called "CUSTOMER SERVICE" or how about this phrase "THE CUSTOMERS COME FIRST". Of course that is how they generate there revenue, from us. But if they keep it up, no one will want there service if every other DSL or CABLE provider will let you. By the way I did find out that you can try to set both computers up directly through ethernet card and network them and then try to confiqure it so that comp two can access Explorer or Netscape.... Just haven't figured that one out also.

i hate aol. i have the same problem at one of my client sites, and can see many more comeing like that soon.

aol customer support is a joke, there job is to make something up, stick to it as if it were biblical law, just to get you off the phone to try there made up tatic for hours before you prove it dosent work, then you have to call back and hear there next retarded made up verbal diarea!!

ive seen on many sites that state AOL has a modified version of pppoe, and it wont work with any nat routers, or anything that will work with pppoe login. it seems like inet connection sharing is the only awnser. or in my case, im going to tell ALL customers form now on that AOL them selfes discloses that they BLOCK the use of the use of a firewall because that would prevent AOL customers pc's from being accessed by AOL themselfes, and that aol has allways had access to its clients computerswant access to the individuals data files.

aol, lie to me, and ill lie to your clients

If you have AOL DSL and want to use multiple computers to access the internet it is easy. Though you can not game online, all computers can share internet access. You need to go to AnalogX.com and DL the program called Proxy. There is a detailed readme in there telling u how to do it. basically you need the AOL computer to have 2 network cards, an ethernet hub (not a DSL CABLE router) and 1 network card on all computers sharing the connection. It will tell you how to configure Internet Explorer and IP addresses for the net cards in the readme. I used it last week hoping to be able to game, but all I could do was surf the net and that was it. So if surfing is all you really want, then do that. Also , you can get a router from AOL for $130.00 that has there proprietary pppoe inside.

I have set up a Siemens 2623 Router for 2 of my computers. My problem is that I used to play Age of Empires II against my friend online and now I can't. Everyone tells me I have to open a port for us to be able to play each other yet no one at tech support can specify what I need to do. If anyone knows how, I will be eternally grateful.
